French Police is a Chicago band working in post-punk and darkwave, notable for singing largely in Spanish. The sound leans on chorus- and reverb-heavy guitar, prominent melodic basslines and simple drum-machine or minimal live percussion, drawing on 1980s coldwave and new wave as much as on Latin American goth and rock en espa"no"l traditions. The group built its following largely online, where the combination of Spanish lyrics and vintage post-punk textures found a large and unusually devoted audience, and has since toured widely off the back of a steady stream of self-released material.
