Devo formed in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1970s around the Casale and Mothersbaugh brothers, several of whom had been students at Kent State University. The band built its work around the theory of de-evolution — the idea that humanity was regressing — and expressed it through stiff, mechanical rhythms, treated guitars, synthesizers and yelped vocals, alongside matching uniforms, energy dome hats and self-produced films.
Their debut album Q: Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! was produced by Brian Eno and released in 1978, and the 1980 single "Whip It" became their best-known song. Devo were early adopters of music video as a medium, and their visual identity remains as widely recognised as the records.
