Echo & The Bunnymen
Liverpool's grandest post-punks — 'The Killing Moon' remains the most beautiful song of its era, and Ian McCulloch will tell you so.
Echo & The Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978, and their early line-up centred on singer Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, bassist Les Pattinson and drummer Pete de Freitas. Their records combined post-punk's spare, driving rhythms with neo-psychedelic guitar textures and McCulloch's declamatory baritone, a sound that filled out across albums such as Heaven Up Here, Porcupine and Ocean Rain.
"The Killing Moon," "The Cutter" and "Bring On the Dancing Horses" remain the best-known songs, and the group's imagery — overcoats, dry ice, cinematic string arrangements — helped define a strand of British guitar music that later bands drew on heavily. De Freitas died in 1989 and the band split soon after, but McCulloch and Sergeant have led continuing versions of the group since the 1990s.
