Jelly Roll is the stage name of Jason DeFord, a singer and rapper from the Antioch area of Nashville. He spent years working in rap and hip-hop, releasing music independently and through collaborations and mixtapes, before shifting toward a country and rock-leaning sound built around confessional writing about addiction, incarceration and recovery. That turn brought him a much larger audience, with songs that pair rough-edged, gospel-tinged vocals with big, arena-scaled choruses.
