Carín León
Sonora's genre-bending superstar — música mexicana with country and soul running through it, and one of the biggest voices in the hemisphere.
León, born Óscar Armando Díaz de León Huez in Hermosillo, Sonora, took up guitar at 15 and played first with a band called Los Reales. In 2010 he founded the norteño group Grupo Arranke with four friends, staying with them for seven years before starting his solo career in 2018.
His recordings draw on ranchera, norteño, banda and mariachi traditions while borrowing openly from blues, soul and American country. His voice is a heavy, gravelly baritone, and he tends to build arrangements around requinto and accordion lines rather than pure sierreño minimalism.
A solo re-recording of Arranke's "A Través del Vaso" launched him as a singer in his own right, and the follow-ups "Me La Avente" and a cover of Noelia's "Tú" both reached Billboard's Hot Latin, Latin Airplay and regional Mexican charts. He has also released covers of Extreme's "More Than Words" and Shakira's "Moscas en la Casa."
He is widely known for the ballad "Que Vuelvas," recorded with Grupo Frontera, which spent six weeks at number one on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart in 2023, part of a broader pattern of collaboration across the border with English-language artists.
León has won four Latin Grammy Awards, for "Como lo Hice Yo" in 2022, the album Colmillo de Leche in 2023, Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 in 2024 and Palabra de To's (Seca) in 2025, the latter two also winning the Grammy Award for Best Música Mexicana Album. He has appeared twice on NPR's Tiny Desk series.
