Liverpool four-piece who went from Hamburg club residencies to studio-only psychedelia in seven years, and broke up in 1970.
The Beatles formed in Liverpool around John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, with Ringo Starr joining on drums in 1962. Long nights playing Hamburg clubs tightened them into a working band, and their early singles drew on American rock and roll, girl-group pop and Merseybeat.
From 1965 onward the records changed quickly: sitar and tape loops, orchestral arrangements, songs assembled in the studio rather than played on stage. They stopped touring in 1966 and spent their last years as a studio group, splitting in 1970. Lennon and McCartney wrote most of the catalogue, with Harrison contributing an increasing share.
