Stone Temple Pilots formed in San Diego in 1990, built around vocalist Scott Weiland, brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo on bass and guitar, and drummer Eric Kretz. Their debut Core arrived during the commercial peak of grunge and sold heavily on the back of 'Plush' and 'Sex Type Thing', though the band moved fairly quickly toward looser, more psychedelic and glam-inflected rock on Purple and Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop.
Weiland's addiction issues repeatedly interrupted the band's work, and he left before his death in 2015. The group has since continued with other vocalists, including Chester Bennington for a period and, later, Jeff Gutt.
