The Greyboy Allstars formed in San Diego in 1993, growing out of the circle around DJ Greyboy and the acid-jazz scene of that decade. The group built its sound on 1960s and '70s soul-jazz, boogaloo and funk — organ and electric piano, saxophone, guitar and drums locked into extended grooves, largely instrumental and built for dancing rather than showcase soloing.
The band worked steadily through the 1990s before its members turned to other projects, and it has reconvened periodically since. The Greyboy Allstars remain best known as a live act, with sets that lean on interplay and sustained rhythm-section work drawn from the records its members collect.
