Pearl Jam formed in Seattle in 1990, built around guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament and singer Eddie Vedder, who had been sent a demo tape while living in San Diego. Their debut arrived at the moment the city's music was breaking nationally, and its songs — driven by Vedder's baritone and McCready's blues-rooted lead playing — became fixtures of American rock radio.
The band spent much of the following decade deliberately limiting videos and press, and fought a public dispute with Ticketmaster over service charges. Drummers changed several times before Matt Cameron joined. Their reputation now rests heavily on live performance, with long, varied setlists and an extensive programme of official concert recordings.
