Seattle's finger-tapping math-rock heroes, reunited — precision with a cocktail in hand, glassy tapping and grooves that sneak up dancing.

Minus the Bear formed in Seattle in 2001, pulling members from the local bands Botch, Kill Sadie and Sharks Keep Moving. The band played its first show only three days after the September 11 attacks, at the Seattle club The Paradox, and released its debut album, Highly Refined Pirates, the following year.

The sound paired Dave Knudson's tapped, effects-heavy guitar lines with synthesizers and shifting time signatures, set against Jake Snider's understated vocals. It sat somewhere between math rock and indie rock, trading technical precision for a groove that felt loose rather than showy. Keyboard player Matt Bayles left in 2006 to focus on producing, replaced by Alex Rose.

Albums including Menos el Oso and Planet of Ice followed through the 2000s, alongside an acoustic EP and a remix collection built from Menos el Oso material. The band became known, among other things, for song titles that read as in-jokes among friends. Over its run Minus the Bear released six full albums and four EPs.

Minus the Bear announced a farewell tour in 2018 and disbanded, playing a final show at The Showbox in Seattle that December. In 2025 the band reunited for an anniversary tour marking twenty years since Menos el Oso.
