American Football
One album in 1999 that quietly became the emo-revival blueprint, and a reunion that turned out to have real songs in it.
American Football formed in Urbana, Illinois in the late 1990s around Mike Kinsella, Steve Lamos and Steve Holmes, releasing a self-titled album in 1999 before disbanding. The record combined interlocking clean guitar lines, unusual time signatures and Kinsella's quiet, conversational singing, along with trumpet from Lamos, and its reputation grew steadily during the band's absence until it became a touchstone for later emo and math rock groups.
The band reunited in 2014 and has since released further albums, also self-titled, that expand the original template with fuller arrangements and guest vocalists. Kinsella is also known for his work as Owen and with Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arc.
