Border-town darkwave — reverbed baritone, chorused bass, and an unusually devoted following, Brownsville goth gone international.
Twin Tribes formed in Brownsville, Texas, in 2017. Luis Navarro, who handles guitars, lead vocals, synths and drum machines, was born across the border in Matamoros, Mexico, while Joel Niño Jr., who plays bass, synth and backing vocals, is from nearby Los Fresnos. The two met in Brownsville.
The pair build tracks around driving chorused bass lines, drum machines, cold synth lines and deep, heavily reverbed vocals, working with instruments including the Roland JX-3P and Korg Poly-800. Their influences draw on 1980s gothic rock and post-punk acts such as the Cure and Depeche Mode, alongside Rock en español bands including Caifanes, Soda Stereo and Size.
Records such as Shadows and Ceremony circulated widely through the international goth and darkwave underground, and years of touring on the strength of that following have made Twin Tribes one of the more cited names in the current dark wave and gothic rock revival.
