Riff-and-groove lifers — Neil Fallon hollering tall tales over the most reliably heavy live band in American rock, three decades without phoning one in.

Clutch came together in 1991 in Germantown, Maryland, and have kept the same four members for essentially their whole career: Neil Fallon on vocals, Tim Sult on guitar, Dan Maines on bass and Jean-Paul Gaster on drums. Before settling on their name, the band went by Glut Trip and Moral Minority, landing on Clutch partly out of a shared interest in cars and partly because a short, one-syllable name fit the moment, as it had for a band they admired, Prong.

Early records leaned on hardcore-adjacent aggression before the band settled into the heavy blues-rock and stoner-rock groove they are best known for, Fallon's declamatory, story-driven lyrics running through conspiracies, folklore and Americana over riffs built for repetition.

Clutch built a following through constant touring and a run of major-label albums that rarely matched the attention their live shows drew. Their debut, Transnational Speedway League, appeared on EastWest in 1993; a self-titled 1995 follow-up brought wider notice but the band was dropped when their A&R contact was fired. The Elephant Riders followed on Columbia in 1998, and Jam Room, a self-released, groove-heavy record, came out in 1999.

Pure Rock Fury, released on Atlantic in 2001, produced a surprise rock-radio hit in 'Careful with That Mic.' Blast Tyrant followed in 2004 with the single 'The Mob Goes Wild,' whose video was directed by Bam Margera and featured his Viva La Bam co-stars. Organist Mick Schauer briefly joined the band, appearing on two mid-2000s albums.

Since 2008 Clutch have released music through their own label, Weathermaker Music, and built their reputation primarily as a touring band, playing steadily for decades across clubs, theatres and rock festivals.
