Light Asylum is the project of Shannon Funchess, formed in Brooklyn in 2008 and initially a duo with Bruno Coviello. Funchess, who had previously contributed vocals to records by TV on the Radio and !!!, built the group's sound around her deep, powerful voice set against hard analogue synthesizers and drum machines. The music draws on early-1980s synth-pop, EBM and industrial, but leans harder and darker than most of its reference points, with songs structured around insistent electronic pulses rather than conventional pop arrangements. Light Asylum released an EP, In Tension, and a self-titled album on Mexican Summer in 2012, after which Funchess continued the project as a solo endeavour.
