Everclear formed in Portland, Oregon in 1992 around singer and guitarist Art Alexakis, who has been the band's only constant member. They emerged during the post-grunge period with loud, hook-driven guitar rock, and their lyrics drew openly on Alexakis's own life: addiction, poverty, a father's absence and divorce. Sparkle and Fade brought the single 'Santa Monica', and the follow-up So Much for the Afterglow produced 'Father of Mine' and 'I Will Buy You a New Life', keeping the band on rock radio through the late 1990s. Everclear has continued to tour and record, with Alexakis leading changing lineups.
