The Goo Goo Dolls formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1986, with John Rzeznik on guitar and vocals and Robby Takac on bass and vocals. The band began as a scrappy punk-influenced rock group on independent labels before shifting towards melodic, radio-oriented rock across the 1990s.
Their commercial breakthrough came with "Name" and then "Iris", written for the film City of Angels, which became one of the most-played American radio songs of the decade. Further hits including "Slide" and "Black Balloon" followed, and the band has continued recording and touring, with Rzeznik and Takac remaining the constant members.
