Marisa Anderson
Guitar soli as landscape painting — blues, minimalism, and open air, the American primitive tradition carried gently forward.
Marisa Anderson is a guitarist based in Portland, Oregon, working mainly in solo instrumental music for electric guitar and lap steel. Her playing draws on country blues, gospel, Mexican and Appalachian folk forms and minimalism, often built from repeated figures that shift slowly rather than from conventional song structures.
She has released a run of solo albums for Thrill Jockey, and has recorded in collaboration as well, including a duo record with guitarist William Tyler and another with drummer Jim White. Her records are largely wordless and unhurried, with a dry, unadorned tone and a good deal of space left around the notes.
