Manic Street Preachers formed in Blackwood, south Wales, in the mid-1980s around James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, Sean Moore and lyricist and guitarist Richey Edwards. Their early records paired glam and punk energy with confrontational sloganeering, culminating in the bleak, spare The Holy Bible. Edwards disappeared in 1995 and the remaining trio continued, moving toward a broader rock sound on Everything Must Go and This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, which produced some of their best-known songs, including "A Design for Life" and "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next." Political argument, literary and historical reference and Bradfield's declamatory singing and lead guitar have remained constants across the catalogue.
