Whitechapel

2 festivals played

Knoxville deathcore that grew genuinely melodic without losing any of the weight underneath — Phil Bozeman's range now the band's superpower.

Whitechapel formed in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 2006, taking their name from the London district associated with the Jack the Ripper killings. The band is fronted by Phil Bozeman and built around a three-guitar line-up, and they became one of the defining acts of American deathcore through albums such as This Is Exile and their self-titled record.

From Mark of the Blade onwards Bozeman began introducing clean singing alongside his low growls, and later albums including The Valley and Kin push further into melody and atmosphere while keeping the down-tuned riffing and blast beats intact. The Valley in particular draws on Bozeman's own childhood, and its subject matter shapes much of the band's recent work.
