Texas deathcore with a groove streak and a fondness for naming records after films — San Antonio swagger at full weight.

Upon a Burning Body formed in San Antonio, Texas in 2005 around vocalist Danny Leal, who remains the band's constant member through several lineup changes. The band's sound sits between deathcore and metalcore, built on down-tuned, groove-heavy riffing and breakdowns, carrying a Texan and Latino identity that shows up in artwork, lyrics and staging.

Their debut album, The World Is Ours, appeared in 2010. The follow-up, Red. White. Green., debuted at No. 105 on the Billboard 200 in 2012, and the third album, The World Is My Enemy Now, released in August 2014, went further, reaching No. 39. That year the band supported Five Finger Death Punch on tour.

A fourth album, Straight from the Barrio, followed in October 2016. Several of the band's records draw their themes and titles from films. Upon a Burning Body has released music through Sumerian Records and toured widely across the United States and Europe, operating independently as of 2023.

The current lineup pairs Leal with guitarist Ruben Alvarez, who has held roles on bass, rhythm and lead guitar since joining in 2005, bassist Thomas Alvarez, and drummer Juan Hinojosa, who first played with the band in its earliest years and returned to the lineup in 2025.
