Nothing More
San Antonio alt-metal showmen — bass-throwing spectacle, Grammy-nominated hooks, and a stage rig built like a science experiment.
Nothing More formed in San Antonio, Texas, in 2003, when drummer Jonny Hawkins and guitarist Mark Vollelunga began writing together after meeting at a church camp. The band spent much of the next decade recording independent albums, touring locally, and struggling to keep a steady lineup or draw label interest.
Toward the end of the 2000s, Hawkins moved from drums to lead vocals, a shift that stabilized the band around him, Vollelunga, and bassist Daniel Oliver. The trio self-funded and recorded their fourth album, the self-titled Nothing More, over three years, using it to land a five-album deal with Eleven Seven Music.
Released in 2014, that album became the band's breakthrough. "This Is the Time (Ballast)" topped the Mediabase Active Rock chart and reached number two on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, while "Mr. MTV," "Jenny," and "Here's to the Heartache" all landed in the top fifteen of both charts.
The 2017 follow-up, The Stories We Tell Ourselves, produced the chart-topping single "Go to War" and earned the band three Grammy nominations: Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for "Go to War." Two more albums followed, Spirits in 2022 and Carnal in 2024.
The band is known for custom-built stage equipment, including a percussion rig and an upright bass contraption played by multiple members at once, built to match songs that mix alternative metal with progressive touches and large melodic choruses.
