The Plot in You began in Hancock County, Ohio in 2010 as a project of vocalist Landon Tewers, who had previously played in the metalcore band Before Their Eyes. Early records leaned on the screamed vocals and heavy riffing common to the genre, but the group gradually shifted toward something slower and more atmospheric, built on low-tuned guitars, programmed textures and Tewers' shift between clean singing, falsetto and harsher delivery.

That change became widely noticed with "Feel Nothing," a song whose quiet-to-heavy structure and restrained arrangement brought the band a much larger audience than its earlier work. The current sound sits between post-hardcore and alternative metal, with an emphasis on space, dynamics and dread rather than sustained aggression.
