Dying Fetus
Maryland death metal built on impossible riffs and a groove that sneaks up under all the brutality — three-piece precision at full slam.
Dying Fetus formed in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in 1991, founded by guitarist and vocalist John Gallagher and bassist Jason Netherton, who chose the name deliberately to be offensive. Guitarist Nick Speleos joined in 1992, with Gallagher initially filling in on drums, and the band's first demo, Bathe in Entrails, followed in 1993 before a settled lineup with drummer Rob Belton and guitarist Brian Latta took shape.
The band's 1996 debut, Purification through Violence, released on the small label Pulverizer Records, set out the approach of dense death-metal riffing broken up by heavy slam sections, alongside a cover of Napalm Death's "Scum." Gallagher has remained the band's sole constant through years of lineup turnover, including a run of different drummers before Kevin Talley joined in 1997.
For much of its life the band has operated as a three-piece, with Sean Beasley on bass and vocals and Trey Williams on drums alongside Gallagher, and lineup changes have not altered the core approach. The music combines death metal and grindcore: technical, fast-shifting riff structures set against sudden slowed-down breakdowns, with low growls and higher barks traded between the two vocalists.
Early on, the band toured relentlessly, including a full U.S. run with Kataklysm and Monstrosity and festival dates at the Milwaukee Metalfest, before signing to the German label Morbid Records and releasing Killing on Adrenaline in 1998. That album and Destroy the Opposition are widely cited within the genre, and the band's lyrics frequently turn to political and social subjects alongside the more graphic material.
