Dying Fetus formed in Maryland in 1991 and has been led throughout by guitarist and vocalist John Gallagher. The band has operated for much of its life as a three-piece, with Sean Beasley on bass and vocals and Trey Williams on drums, and its lineup changes have not altered the core approach.
The music combines death metal and grindcore: technical, fast-shifting riff structures set against sudden slowed-down breakdowns, with the low growls and higher barks traded between the two vocalists. Albums such as Destroy the Opposition and Killing on Adrenaline are widely cited within the genre, and the band's lyrics frequently turn to political and social subjects alongside the more graphic material.
