Sir Richard Bishop is an American guitarist who came to attention as a founding member of Sun City Girls, the long-running Phoenix trio he formed with his brother Alan Bishop and drummer Charles Gocher. Over 26 years, from 1981 to 2007, the group produced more than fifty full-length albums, two dozen cassettes and a handful of singles.
His playing draws on flamenco, North African and South Asian modal music, jazz and American folk fingerpicking, often within improvised pieces that shift between idioms mid-performance.
He began performing solo in 2005, touring Europe, Australia and the United States, and has shared bills with Will Oldham, Animal Collective and Devendra Banhart among others. His live sets are typically unaccompanied and largely improvised.
His first solo album, Salvador Kali, appeared on John Fahey's Revenant Records in 1998, followed by a run of releases on Locust Music and Drag City including Improvika, Fingering the Devil and The Freak of Araby, a tribute to Egyptian guitarist Omar Khorshid.
In 2003 he co-founded the Sublime Frequencies label with Alan Bishop and Hisham Mayet, devoted to field recordings and overlooked music from Africa, Asia and beyond.
