Scientist
Dub's mixing-desk prodigy — King Tubby's heir rewiring bass in real time, a live dub masterclass at festival volume.
Scientist is the working name of Hopeton Brown, a Jamaican mixing engineer from Kingston who came up in the late 1970s at King Tubby's studio, where he learned dub technique from Tubby himself. He went on to work at Channel One and other Jamaican studios, mixing dub versions of rhythms recorded by the era's leading players.
His albums from the early 1980s are among the most widely circulated dub records, often issued with cartoon sleeves and themed titles. Performing live, he works the mixing desk as an instrument, dropping instruments in and out and running vocals and drums through reverb and delay in real time.
