Dub's mixing-desk prodigy — King Tubby's heir rewiring bass in real time, a live dub masterclass at festival volume.
Scientist is the working name of Hopeton Brown, a mixing engineer from Kingston, Jamaica, who learned his trade at King Tubby's studio in the late 1970s, working directly under Tubby before moving through Channel One and other Kingston studios mixing dub versions of rhythms cut by the era's session players.
His early 1980s albums remain widely circulated dub records, packaged with cartoon sleeves and themed titles, among them Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires, Scientist Wins The World Cup and Heavyweight Dub Champion, records that have stayed in circulation among dub collectors since.
Performing live, Scientist treats the mixing desk as an instrument, dropping instruments in and out of the mix and running vocals and drums through reverb and delay in real time, building and dismantling a track as it plays.
His mixing work has extended well beyond those early dub sessions. In more recent years he has produced remixes for artists including Interpol and Khruangbin, carrying techniques developed decades earlier at King Tubby's desk into contemporary studio production.
