'Mutt' made him R&B's breakout craftsman — a producer-writer's touch with a showman's voice, years of behind-the-scenes credits finally center stage.

Leon Thomas III grew up in Brooklyn and began as a child performer, appearing on Broadway and later in Nickelodeon's Victorious, before shifting his focus to writing and production. He spent much of the following decade working behind the scenes, contributing production and songwriting to records by other artists, including SZA's "Snooze."

His own music is R&B built on live instrumentation and layered vocal arrangements, with Thomas playing and producing much of it himself. Electric Dusk introduced him as a solo artist, and the follow-up Mutt brought him considerably wider attention, pairing frank, sometimes uncomfortable writing about relationships with a warm, guitar-inflected soul sound.
