'Friday' survivor turned genuinely credible hyperpop artist — a reinvention the internet actually respects.

Rebecca Black was born in Irvine, California, to two veterinarians, her mother a Mexican immigrant and her father of English, Italian and Polish descent. Bullied after moving from private to public school, she found a home in the school's musical theater program before dropping out in 2011, aged thirteen, to be homeschooled and pursue music full time.

Her mother paid a Los Angeles company, ARK Music Factory, to produce a music video for a pre-written song called "Friday". Uploaded in February 2011, it drew barely a thousand views for a month before exploding online in March, becoming the most talked-about topic on Twitter and drawing intense mockery alongside death threats that were investigated by police. She discussed the reaction on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno within weeks.

She kept releasing music independently through the 2010s, including the 2013 single "Saturday" with Dave Days, and put out two EPs before a hyperpop-leaning remix of "Friday", featuring producers and artists from that scene, changed how her work was received. Her 2021 EP Rebecca Black Was Here marked the sound shift directly.

Her later material sits in club-adjacent, maximalist pop, dense with production and vocal processing, and she has spoken openly about her queerness in her music and interviews. Her debut album, Let Her Burn, arrived in 2023 to favorable reviews, followed by the EP Salvation in 2025 and a second album, Age of the Exhibitionist, in 2026.
