Three 6 Mafia formed in Memphis in the early 1990s around producers DJ Paul and Juicy J, alongside Lord Infamous, with Crunchy Black, Koopsta Knicca and Gangsta Boo among the members over the years. Their early cassette-era work, including Mystic Stylez, set out the sound they became known for: slowed, ominous loops, hi-hat-heavy drum programming and horror-film imagery.
The group crossed over in the 2000s with Most Known Unknown and the single "Stay Fly," and in 2006 won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," written for the film Hustle & Flow. Their production style has been widely cited by later trap and underground rap artists.
