Started as teenage hardcore and grew into something ragged and grand — swaggering, unstable post-punk with a frontman who performs like the floor might give way.

Iceage formed in Copenhagen in 2008, when the members averaged seventeen years old. They signed to the Danish label Escho for a debut seven-inch in 2009, also released through Tambourhinoceros and Dais Records, before the American label What's Your Rupture? picked up international distribution. Their debut album, New Brigade, came out in Denmark in January 2011 and in the United States that June.

You're Nothing followed in 2013, the first album released through Matador Records, and drew strong reviews from Allmusic and the Belgian magazine Humo. Plowing Into the Field of Love arrived the following year, moving the band away from its hardcore roots toward arrangements shaped by Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. All three albums were nominated for IMPALA's European Independent Album of the Year award.

Beyondless followed on Matador in 2018. Seek Shelter, released in 2021, was the first Iceage album made with an outside producer, Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, and the first to feature guitarist Casper Morilla, who had joined the band in 2019. A sixth album, For Love of Grace & the Hereafter, followed in 2026.

Elias Bender Rønnenfelt sings in a half-slurred, half-sung style that often drifts off the beat, and it remains the band's most recognisable trait alongside a live show built on unpredictability rather than rehearsed polish.

Rønnenfelt has also recorded outside the band, releasing two albums as Marching Church, This World Is Not Enough in 2015 and Telling It Like It Is in 2016, followed by a solo album, Heavy Glory, in 2024, and a collaborative EP with Dean Blunt, Lucre, in 2025.
