Los Retros is the project of Mauri Tapia, a musician from Oxnard, California, who began recording at home as a teenager and plays most of the instruments himself. The music draws on 1970s and 1980s soft soul and Latin balladry, built from electric piano, clean guitar, drum machines and softly sung, often lovelorn vocals.
Tapia's early home recordings circulated online before he signed to Stones Throw Records, which released his first material under the name. Live, the project expands to a full band, though the recorded work keeps the intimate, slightly lo-fi character of its bedroom origins.
