Mallrat
Grace Shaw writes featherweight pop that hits harder than its volume suggests — half-whispered hooks, hip-hop-schooled rhythm, and an eye for the small devastating detail.
Mallrat is the recording name of Grace Shaw, who grew up in Brisbane and began releasing music as a teenager in the mid-2010s. Her early EPs collected songs such as "Groceries" and "Charlie," built from soft, close-miked vocals, simple melodic hooks and rhythms borrowed more from hip-hop and pop production than from guitar music.
The writing tends toward small, specific observations delivered plainly rather than dramatised, and the arrangements stay deliberately uncluttered. Her debut album, Butterfly Blue, extended that approach with a wider palette while keeping the quiet, unforced delivery at the centre. She has collaborated with a range of Australian producers and rappers over the course of her career.
