Finch
'What It Is to Burn'-era post-hardcore, still one of the era's most-loved single records — a title track that remains a scene-wide scream-along.
Finch came together in Temecula, California, in 1999, with Nate Barcalow on vocals and a twin-guitar attack that split the difference between melodic emo and screamed post-hardcore. Their 2002 debut What It Is to Burn, along with singles "Letters to You" and the title track, became one of the defining records of that period's American scene, and the album's closing song still functions as a mass singalong wherever the band plays.
The follow-up, Say Hello to Sunshine, took a darker and more angular turn that divided listeners at the time but has since been reassessed more kindly. Finch have broken up and reformed more than once, with reunions typically organised around the anniversary of the first record.
