Post-hardcore's great withholders — Daryl Palumbo's serrated delivery over grooves that lurch sideways, and records doled out a decade apart.

Glassjaw formed in the summer of 1993 in Hempstead, New York, after vocalist Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck met at camp. The band cycled through several names, including xGlassjawx and The Glassjaw, before settling on Glassjaw simply because it sounded right. They played their first show in Oceanside, New York, in 1994, after years in the local hardcore scene.

Producer Ross Robinson discovered the band through their demos and helped secure a deal with Roadrunner Records, then produced their 2000 debut, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence, which built a strong following in the United Kingdom. After a falling-out with Roadrunner, the band moved to Warner Bros. for Worship and Tribute in 2002, which reached number 82 on the Billboard 200.

The tour behind that album was repeatedly interrupted by Palumbo's Crohn's disease, and studio output slowed through the rest of the decade as he and Beck worked on other projects, including Head Automatica. After leaving Warner Bros., the band self-released a run of 7-inch singles in 2010, later gathered into the EP Our Color Green, followed by another EP, Coloring Book, in 2011.

Material Control arrived in 2017 through Century Media Records, their first full album in fifteen years. In 2022 the band played shows marking the twentieth anniversaries of their first two records, still pairing Palumbo's swings between melody and scream with angular, groove-driven guitar.
