Medicine Singers with Lee Ranaldo & Yonatan Gat

Eastern Algonquin powwow drum group Eastern Medicine Singers in their electric collaboration with guitarist Yonatan Gat: ceremonial vocals and hand drums colliding with noise-rock, here with Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo added to the guitar section.

The project grew out of a meeting between Eastern Medicine Singers, the Rhode Island drum group led by Daryl Black Eagle Jamieson, and Yonatan Gat, the Israeli guitarist who first became known playing in the trio Monotonix. Gat began sitting in with the singers, then built a band around them, keeping the drum and the Algonquin-language songs at the center while guitars, bass and horns work around the beat.

Medicine Singers released a self-titled album in 2022 with a long guest list, among them Lee Ranaldo and the trumpeter Jaimie Branch. Live, the volume sits closer to a rock show than a powwow ground, with the drum group's unison singing pushed through amplification and feedback.
