Dowd grew up in the Sandhills of North Carolina and is based in Greensboro. She fingerpicks and plays slide, and her songs work through rivers, pines and weather as a way of getting at grief and recovery. Her voice is low and unhurried, and arrangements tend to stay sparse enough that the guitar carries the melody alongside her.
