Širom
Slovenian 'imaginary folk' trio — handmade instruments conjuring places that don't exist, ritual music from an invented tradition.
Širom is a Slovenian trio formed in 2015 by Ana Kravanja, Samo Kutin and Iztok Koren, each drawing from a different home region: Kravanja from the Karst Plateau, Kutin from the Tolmin area and Koren from Prekmurje. All three play multiple instruments and rotate between them through a performance.
Their instrumentarium includes violin, viola, banjo, balafon, ribab, lyre, kalimba and a range of self-built and modified string and percussion instruments, giving each piece a shifting, handmade texture.
The pieces are long and largely composed rather than improvised, built from layered acoustic textures and repeating cycles that fuse polyphony with folk, classical and psychedelic elements. The result borrows the grammar of folk music without belonging to any particular tradition.
Their debut album appeared in 2016, and the track "Trilogija" was named Song of the Day on Seattle's KEXP radio in March 2017. The trio's second album, I Can Be a Clay Snapper, followed that September on the German label tak:til.
