Širom
Slovenian 'imaginary folk' trio — handmade instruments conjuring places that don't exist, ritual music from an invented tradition.
Širom is a Slovenian trio formed in 2015 by Ana Kravanja, Samo Kutin and Iztok Koren, all of whom play multiple instruments and rotate between them. Their instrumentarium includes violin, viola, banjo, balafon, ribab, lyre and a range of self-built and modified string and percussion instruments.
Their pieces are long, largely composed rather than improvised, and built from layered acoustic textures and repeating cycles. The result borrows the grammar of folk music without belonging to any particular tradition, and has been documented across several albums for the Glitterbeat label's tak:til imprint.
