Creeper
Southampton's theatrical horror-punk, committed to the concept album and the costume change in equal measure — AFI drama with a British music-hall streak.
Creeper formed in Southampton in 2014 around vocalist Will Gould and guitarist Ian Miles, who had previously played together in the punk band Our Time Down Here. They were joined by guitarist Sina Nemati, bassist Sean Scott and drummer Dan Bratton. The name was chosen because it sounded like the title of a Stephen King novel, without tying the band to any particular genre.
The band originally intended a New Romantic-influenced dark wave sound before the material shifted toward horror punk and melodic hardcore. Their self-titled debut EP appeared independently in 2014, followed by The Callous Heart in 2015 after signing to Roadrunner Records. That year Nemati left and was replaced by Oliver Burdett, while touring keyboardist and second vocalist Hannah Greenwood became an official member.
Early acclaim followed quickly: Metal Hammer, Kerrang! and Rock Sound all gave the band awards in 2016, the same year their EP The Stranger reached the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart top ten. The debut album, Eternity, in Your Arms, reached number 18 on the UK Albums Chart in 2017, adding gothic rock, piano ballads and a running narrative populated by recurring characters.
After a year off, Creeper returned in 2020 with Sex, Death & the Infinite Void, which reached number 5 in the UK. Bratton and Burdett left soon after; Jake Fogarty took over on drums for 2021's American Noir. The band signed to Spinefarm Records for 2023's Sanguivore, and guitarist Lawrie Pattison, touring with them since Burdett's exit, became an official member in 2024.
The music mixes punk urgency with glam and goth influences, and Gould's vocals sit somewhere between snarl and croon. Each album cycle arrives with its own story, visual language and costuming, and live, Creeper treats the show as theatre as much as a gig.
