João Bosco
One of MPB's great guitarist-composers, whose partnership with lyricist Aldir Blanc wrote some of Brazil's most enduring songs.
João Bosco was born in Ponte Nova, Minas Gerais, and trained as a civil engineer before music took over. His long collaboration with the lyricist Aldir Blanc produced "O Bêbado e a Equilibrista", which Elis Regina recorded in 1979 and which became associated with the campaign for amnesty during the dictatorship, along with "Kid Cavaquinho", "Linha de Passe" and "Corsário".
On stage he usually works with a nylon-string guitar, playing samba rhythms percussively against his own voice, and breaking into wordless syllabic runs that function as another instrument. He performs solo and with small ensembles, drawing on a catalogue that runs from the early 1970s onward.
