Gilberto Gil
Tropicália's co-founder and Brazil's musical conscience — six decades of joy as resistance.
Gilberto Gil was born in Salvador, Bahia, and emerged in the 1960s as one of the central figures of Tropicália alongside Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Tom Zé and Os Mutantes — a movement that folded rock, psychedelia and the avant-garde into Brazilian popular song. The military government imprisoned him and Veloso in 1969, and both spent the following years exiled in London.
Returning to Brazil, Gil built a long career across MPB, samba, reggae and African-influenced styles, and his guitar playing and light, flexible voice run through all of it. He later entered public life, serving as Brazil's Minister of Culture in the Lula government from 2003 to 2008.
