Arthur Verocai
His 1972 self-titled record flopped, got sampled to death decades later, and turned him into a live legend — orchestral Brazilian soul performed with a full string section.
Arthur Verocai is a Brazilian composer, arranger, guitarist and singer from Rio de Janeiro. His self-titled album of 1972 combined MPB songwriting with strings, horns and jazz-inflected arrangements; it sold poorly at the time, and Verocai spent much of the following decades working as an arranger and writing music for advertising and television.
The record was rediscovered by collectors and sampled by hip-hop producers, which led to reissues and, eventually, to Verocai performing the material on stage for the first time. His concerts typically use a large ensemble with a string and horn section, reproducing the density of the original arrangements.
