Working Men's Club

1 upcoming festival

Yorkshire synth-punk — New Order's chassis with a teenage engine, hacienda pulse rebuilt for new floors.

Working Men's Club formed in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, around frontman Syd Minsky-Sargeant, who began the project as a teenager and has remained its constant while the surrounding line-up shifted. Early singles leaned on guitars before the band moved decisively toward drum machines, sequencers and analogue synthesisers.

The result draws on post-punk, acid house and early electronic body music, with Minsky-Sargeant's flat, clipped vocals set against repetitive machine rhythms. Records have been produced with Ross Orton, and the band's live sets tend to push the material harder and faster than the studio versions, closer to a club set than a conventional rock show.
