Hull shoegazers steadily trading guitar cathedrals for electronics — reverb-drowned melody that has grown colder, clubbier and more deliberate with every record.

bdrmm began as a bedroom project by Ryan Smith in Hull; an early demo picked up by BBC Radio 1 encouraged him to build it into a full band, bringing in his brother Jordan Smith along with friends Joe Vickers, Danny Hull and Luke Irvin. After releasing two self-recorded demo EPs and touring relentlessly, the group signed to Sonic Cathedral in 2019 and released the EP If Not, When? that year.

Their debut album, Bedroom, followed on Sonic Cathedral in 2020, built from layered guitars, heavy reverb and washed-out vocals sitting low in the mix, in keeping with the British shoegaze tradition. Live, the band plays at high volume through dense banks of effects, building tracks slowly rather than delivering them in conventional song shapes.

Their second album, I Don't Know, arrived in 2023 after the band signed to Mogwai's Rock Action label, drawing on ambient, trip hop, slowcore and jazz alongside the guitars. Krautrock and dance music grew more audible too, as synthesisers and drum machines began pulling the songs away from guitar-only textures.

Microtonic, released in 2025, pushed further into electronic production. The band now works as a four-piece: Ryan and Jordan Smith alongside Joe Vickers and drummer Conor Murray. Alongside their albums, bdrmm have remixed tracks for Daniel Avery, A Place to Bury Strangers, Strange Pink and Andy Bell.
