John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project
Rotating cast of Nashville players working through the hundreds of fiddle tunes Hartford wrote in his notebooks and never recorded.
John Hartford wrote Gentle on My Mind, piloted steamboats on the Ohio and Mississippi, and spent his last years filling notebooks with original fiddle tunes, most of which he never recorded. Fiddler Matt Combs, who played with Hartford, went through that manuscript archive with Hartford's daughter Katie Harford Hogue and began bringing the tunes to Nashville players to be learned and put on tape. The performing group draws on a large pool of musicians, and the tunes themselves are quirky and asymmetrical in the way Hartford's own playing was.
