Massive Attack
Bristol's trip-hop architects — 'Teardrop' dread and LED-wall politics in one of live music's heaviest atmospheres.
Massive Attack formed in Bristol in 1987 out of the city's Wild Bunch sound system, with Robert Del Naja, Grant Marshall and Andrew Vowles as the founding core. Their debut Blue Lines is generally credited as a foundational trip hop record, combining slow hip-hop breakbeats with dub, soul and ambient textures. Later albums, including Protection and Mezzanine, moved towards darker, more claustrophobic arrangements; "Teardrop", sung by Elizabeth Fraser, remains their best-known track.
The group has worked with a long list of guest vocalists, among them Shara Nelson, Tricky, Horace Andy and Tracey Thorn. Live, they perform with a full band and a large-scale visual system designed with United Visual Artists, often carrying explicit political and news content.
