Massive Attack
Bristol's trip-hop architects — 'Teardrop' dread and LED-wall politics in one of live music's heaviest atmospheres.
Massive Attack came together in Bristol in 1987, growing out of the Wild Bunch, a sound system whose DJs and rappers, including Grant Marshall and Robert Del Naja, had met in the early 1980s and come to dominate the city's club scene. The founding line-up also included Andrew Vowles and, initially, Adrian 'Tricky' Thaws, who left in 1994 to pursue a solo career.
Early on, the group signed to Circa Records for six studio albums and a compilation, having already released the single 'Any Love', co-produced by the Bristol duo Smith & Mighty and featuring singer Carlton McCarthy.
Their debut, Blue Lines, is generally credited as a foundational trip hop record, combining slow hip-hop breakbeats with dub, soul and ambient textures. Neneh Cherry helped bring the album together, and her partner Cameron McVey, an executive producer on the record, became the group's first manager; part of it was recorded at their house. The single 'Unfinished Sympathy' reached number one in the Netherlands and was later voted the 63rd greatest song of all time by NME.
Later albums, including Protection and Mezzanine, moved towards darker, more claustrophobic arrangements; Mezzanine gave the group its first number one on the UK Albums Chart, and its single 'Teardrop', sung by Elizabeth Fraser, remains their best-known track. Vowles left in 1999, leaving Del Naja and Marshall to continue as a duo through 100th Window in 2003 and Heligoland in 2010; as of 2025 they remain the group's only members.
The group has worked with a long list of guest vocalists, among them Shara Nelson, Tricky, Horace Andy, Tracey Thorn, Sinéad O'Connor and Damon Albarn. Blue Lines and Mezzanine both appear on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums, and the band's awards include a Brit Award for Best British Dance Act and two Q Awards. Live, they perform with a full band and a large-scale visual system designed with United Visual Artists, often carrying explicit political and news content, part of a broader engagement with human rights and environmental causes.
