Bristol's absurdist funk-punk duo — crisps, capitalism, and cowbell, mundane British life set to grooves that genuinely slap.
Ben Sadler and Josh Law met at school in Minehead, Somerset, and later formed Getdown Services together, basing themselves in Bristol at the start of the 2020s. The two-piece split guitar, drums and vocals between them, keeping the whole operation to just the pair.
Their songs pair deadpan, half-spoken vocals in broad West Country accents with disco and funk-derived grooves, and the lyrics tend to dwell on small domestic frustrations, jobs, shopping and the general texture of British life. The comedy is dry rather than novelty, and the rhythm section is played straight enough that the songs work as dance music.
Getdown Services self-released the single "Biscuit Tin" in 2022, with proceeds going to the local branch of the ACORN renters' union, followed by "Cream of the Crop" the next year. They then signed to Bristol label Breakfast Records and released their debut album, Crisps, in 2023.
The band built a cult following on the strength of those releases, taking support slots for acts including Fat Dog, Donny Benét and Antony Szmierek before mounting a sold-out headline tour of the UK in autumn 2024.
