Britpop's cheekiest survivors — 'Alright' forever young, the catalog sneakily one of the era's best.
Before Supergrass, teenage Oxford schoolmates Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey played together in the Jennifers, a band that built a local following and released one single on Nude Records before splitting in 1992. Supergrass formed the following year around Coombes, Goffey and Mick Quinn as a three-piece, with Gaz's brother Rob Coombes joining officially on keyboards in 2002 after contributing to the band for years beforehand.
Signed to Parlophone in 1994, the band released I Should Coco in 1995, the label's best-selling debut album since the Beatles' Please Please Me. Its fourth single, 'Alright', became an international hit whose ubiquity has tended to overshadow the rest of their work.
Across subsequent albums, including In It for the Money, Supergrass, Life on Other Planets, Road to Rouen and Diamond Hoo Ha, the band moved away from the fast, adolescent energy of the early singles toward heavier and more textured material, taking in glam, psychedelia and straightforward rock. A seventh album, started after signing to Cooking Vinyl in 2009, was never finished.
The band split in 2010 after four farewell shows and reunited in 2019, first at Pilton Party and then at a secret London show at Oslo in Hackney. In 2022 they performed at a tribute concert for Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, a professed fan who had once joined them onstage, and they announced a 2025 tour marking I Should Coco's thirtieth anniversary. Gaz Coombes has also released solo albums in the interim.
