Cut Copy
Melbourne's great indie-dance band — '80s synth textures with genuine songwriting under them, 'Lights & Music' still an instant floor-filler.
Cut Copy began in Melbourne in the early 2000s as a solo project of Dan Whitford, a graphic designer who assembled the first recordings from samples and drum machines before the group became a full band. Signed to the Modular label, they became one of the central acts in Australian indie-dance, pairing synthesiser sounds indebted to 1980s new wave and electro-pop with conventional song structures and Whitford's high, slightly reedy vocals. The second album, In Ghost Colours, took them to a wider audience, and 'Lights & Music' remains their best-known track. Later records leaned further into house and Balearic influences. Live, the band plays with guitars, live drums and banks of keyboards rather than performing as a DJ act.
