Edson Gomes was born in Bahia and has been recording since the 1980s, when he became one of the central figures in Brazilian roots reggae alongside the scene that grew up around Salvador and São Luís. He sings in a deep, unhurried baritone over slow one-drop rhythms, and his lyrics deal directly with poverty, racial injustice and Christian faith, delivered in language stripped of metaphor. Songs such as "Malandro" and "Camarada" are long-standing staples of his live sets.
