Burning Spear
Roots reggae's living conscience — Marcus Garvey hymns delivered with unshakeable calm.
Burning Spear is the name used by Winston Rodney, a roots reggae singer born in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica — the same parish as Marcus Garvey, whose teachings run through much of his work. He began recording for Studio One in the late 1960s and later worked with producer Jack Ruby, whose sessions produced the album Marcus Garvey.
His music is built on slow, hypnotic rhythms, horn arrangements and a chanting, repetitive vocal delivery that leans more toward incantation than conventional singing. Rodney has recorded steadily for decades, with a catalogue centred on Rastafarian faith, African history and Jamaican identity.
