Gondwana
Chilean roots reggae band from Santiago, going since the late 1980s and singing in Spanish over deep one-drop rhythms.
Gondwana formed in Santiago in the late 1980s and became one of the first Chilean bands to play roots reggae seriously, taking their name from the ancient supercontinent. Quique Neira sang with them through their early years and wrote much of the material that carried them across Latin America before leaving for a solo career. The band kept going with new vocalists, working in Spanish over one-drop rhythms, with horn lines and long instrumental passages that lean on Jamaican records from the 1970s rather than on later dancehall styles.
